Default im amazed at how good the ar does with studless...

even when my driveway is so icy I can't walk down it, the AR somehow manages to climb up it with studless snow tires.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/108298/img_3029.jpg">

i really think studs would be overkill for portland, and you will love the studless tires.

Default Just a side note, I drive in this all winter... and have never had to use chains, especially on an

AWD vehicle, and I really don't see the difference between the PNW, and the mountains of Pa. Which I've just return thru.

If the road conditions are that bad, then any reasonable person would stay off the road.

But then what do I know, I've only driven a couple of million miles in Audi's.

My commute is 40 miles each way from the burbs of Chicago, to downtown on the lakeshore, I'm usually one of the first out on the road around 4am, and the last out as I do the return late in the evening.

And I do have a serious problem with those that drive an un-equiped vehicle in this kind of weather, I see them in the ditches, on the tow trucks, and in the news when they kill themselves. Now I haven't really got a problem with those that choose thru self will to take themselves out of the gene pool, but I resent the hell out of the fact that they usually take others with them.

Last nite we had snow mixed with sleet all nite till just about an hour ago, there are multible layers of snow, and ice on the roads.
And thanks to our corrupt state government, they have decided its too expensive to plow and salt our roads this year.

And as I make a run out for milk, bread, and smokes I witness the clueless out there sliding thru the intersections, and attempting to race from one place and another. Till one dufus is unable to stop to yeild for the left turn light, and they all pile up in the middle of the intersection @ Ogden and Washington. Seems dufus is driving his rice with his HP summer tires, and is unable to reduce his speed. Last time I looked, there where three emergency vehicles, one wrecker, and 4 police cars all trying to pry dufus from the front seat of his crushed rice mobile. And I wondered why they expend all the effort, he made his choices, he had his chance to do the right thing. Why not expend that energy helping the other three vehicles he hit due to his poor choices, and lack of driving ability!

Thats just my opinion for what its worth!

all of my neighbors are parking in the street, I have the steepest driveway around yet my allroad sleeps in the garage every night. every single one of my neighbors have commented on the AR, saying that its unbelievable i can make it out. I agree :P quattro ftmfw

Default I am amazed at how well the ar does on ice/snow...todays was a sad trip, but

I wanted to visit the cemetery as my Mom passed away last June so this is our first Christmas without her and we got snow/ice in the night and I wasn't sure how well they plow the cemetery, but I really wanted to check out the new flowers my daughters and granddaughter had put out yesterday and even though the roads had had a first pass with a plow I think the maintenance guy with the tractor was worried we would get stuck as he watched us and made sure we could get out...well just for good old Mom (as she always called my allroad "that" car) I took it up one of the major hills in the cemetery (my younger daughter was not thrilled) and it was cool to see how it just bites into the snow and just climbs.

Default studless GY F1 A/S here and no difficulty in PDX

For those that know the Tigard area from Scholls Ferry to Bull Mountain Rd. I was able to drive up Greenfield and Benchview in snow in the morning and deep rutted slush in the evening today. Just went slow and steady and the AR never skipped a beat.

I'm just seeing this old post. I live in Portland and am trying to find the right winter tire for my new Audi after driving for years on 2WD A/S with chains when necessary. I'm looking forward to being able to just drive in all but the worst weather, rather than having to worry about it, so I'm leaning toward ice and snows (Blizzak WS70s, Michelin Xice2, Nokian Hakka Rs).

Which studless tires are Audi owners in Portland running? Pros/cons?

I am surprised that chains/studded tires are not outlawed in Portland.

Here in Toronto, it's against the law. Not necessary at all. Just get some decent winter tires, read reviews on tirerack

Only people from Northern Ontario are permitted to have studded tires. And this is Canada (where we stereotypically, supposedly have snow 24/7/365).

I wouldn't waste the money on studs. The only give you a advantage on ice. I live in Massachusetts and the roads to get ****ty but I never had a problem getting around with good allseasons or snows. I would invest in the most aggressive tread of snow tire before I bought studded ones. Even look into small truck snows if your worried about getting stuck. I know in Mass the roads are fine a few hours after a storm from all the salt spread everywhere.

My 18' Michelin MXV4's preformed flawlessly in last weeks storm.

My 2 cents
