Default Strange

Studs and chains are both legal in Vancouver. Must be a Pacific Coast thing.

Here in Toronto, it's against the law. Not necessary at all. Just get some decent winter tires, read reviews on tirerack, they can be insightful.

Only people from Northern Ontario are permitted to have studded tires. And this is Canada (where we stereotypically, supposedly have snow 24/7/365).

My Allroad has studded Nokians for winter use in the Colorado Rockies. Stops and goes better than my 200q20v avant with unstudded Nokians when the roads are icy, but no better when it's just snow. I've never NOT been able to get up some of the steeper grades with the unstudded, but the Allroad feels more surefooted when it's really slippery.

For whatever reason Portland doesn't use salt, but instead uses volcanic ash. That fact, combined with the terrain and climate, means traction devices are required.

When it's slick, it's REALLY slick--32F with ice/snow/slush. I drove for years in the midwest and NE without needing winter tires. The PNW is different--you definitely need chains, studs, or (hopefully) studless tires when it gets icy.

Thanks,
Evan

Have 19" Nokian WR GR 255/40 R19 100V XL which have been great in the snow. Haven't tried them on slippery ice yet. I think anything other than studs or chains would have to tread really softly in those kind of conditions. This photo was taken at Duffey Lake in BC just over a year ago when I first got the tires. It was -10C(12°F) early on a Sunday morning, no traffic and just fantastic fun driving conditions.

Beautiful!

Yes, ice, particularly right around freezing, warrants significant respect (and all the hardware you can throw at it).

Are you running the WRGs year 'round?
