Those of you without integrated DVD players what type of portable do you have that hangs on the back
of the seat...I'm looking for sturdy, easy to use (a remote?), did I say sturdy (my Granddaughter is only 2 and not a zillion dollars...some of these brands I've never heard of and we've gone through two already for my younger daughter so I know they don't last forever, especially when you let your cousin use it...would want car charger and a case that holds it in place on the back of the seat...this is only marginally allroad related as it would mostly be for my daughters '05 Impala. Any and all thoughts would be great appreciated. TIA gang

I went with the SEVIC headrest cover system...where
the monitor is integrated into a velour like slip cover that goes over your headrest...easy to remove and switch into other cars...seperate DVD player attached with cables, remotes and wireless headset...jcwhitney.com has them in a dual or single headrest version...not cheap but REALLY nice....size large fits our headrests...tan our dark grey are color options...

I use a 7" portable with a pair of giant rubber bands wrapped around the metal prods of the headrest
The rubber bands are probably 1/16" thick by 5/8" wide by about 12" long before stretching, and probably won't break until at least 50-100 pounds of pressure are put on them. They hold it on there better than anything else I found that was marketed for portable DVD players. Going with this method puts the base of the DVD player on top of the seat back for added stability support too. The DVD player moves no more than the headrest does while driving.

Purchased inexpensive pair from Office Depot because
1) they were on sale
2) the kids needed one each as they did not agree on what to watch
3) needed to move from A6 to allroad and back
4) needed to be used at yaiyai's house
5) had everyting I wanted ie; car adapters, AC adapters and velcro strips for attaching to the headrest posts.
6) wanted something that if broken I wouldn't be upset over
After several trips in both vehicles and use in the house I am completely happy with them. They are 7" Initial Model 1731 and have sustained dropping and 10 to 13 year old handling. I think I paid almost $200 for the pair. I made a splitter for the rear accessory plug so both can be plugged in at the same time.
I also found out the hard way that the watcher does not want to watch with the player in their lap as to the susceptibility to motion sickness is increased 10 fold. I suggest that if the watcher has a weak stomach it is better to watch the DVD hanging from the headrest so that they can see the movement of scenery outside. Understand from personal experience that this is an important consideration when planning trips. Good luck.
p.s. I've also used them on motorcycle trips.

I like this package. Too bad girlroad needs portability. LCP's rubberbands grip me. I always used
the big tie-wraps at the armrest and then just cut them off after each drive (only did this a few times so far). I'm going to try that band idea one day, but no long trips planned yet.

We ended up with...
A single Polaroid (model PDM-0824) from Best Buy a few years ago which has the screen that flips around if you choose to hold it in your lap. We then purchased a Targus portable DVD case which came with a flat piece with straps. That worked pretty well with the Polaroid on the back of a headrest. Sturdy and accessible. This was in wife's Honda Pilot.
Now we have built-in DVD's players in the headrest (wife's new MB ML350) so the Polaroid stays in the playroom at home. It get's more abuse now than when in the car and is still holding up really well. Until yesterday, when my 4 year old decided to cut the internal ribbon cable that connects to the laser with finger nail clippers. Oh well... off to ebay I go for used parts repair. I didn't love the Polaroid brand for electronics before this purchase but have been pleased with the abuse resilient factor for sure. Price was reasonable as well.

Re: Those of you without integrated DVD players what type of portable do you have that hangs on the
Just bought a Panasonic DVD-LS82 portable player. Its screen folds back on itself, it has its own in-car power cable and mount (designed to strap round headrest), can be used on its rechargeable battery and is only $200.
Like all these things the picture and sound isn't great quality but it works very well in the car, even in bright light, and sits best strapped to upturned front armrest: two children can see it clearly and toddlers in car seats can't reach any of the buttons. Also small enough to store under the floor in the back.
