Default I have been calling around getting quotes for this...

$900 Indy and $1500 dealer, sound about right?

I have only been to the dealer so far (all warranty work), so this would be my first trip to the indy mechanic, but for $600 I thought I would give them a shot.

I would DIY, but would like to have the work warrantied.

Default Indy Vs dealer

I give the timing belt nod to the dealer. My indy said $1,000, dealer said $1,200.00. I needed to get some warranty work done as well so off the dealer. Dealer fixed the leaking valve cover under warranty and because the engine was apart, he found the DV all gunked up. They were replaced for free. So the extra $200 was so worth going to the dealer.

Default I like a good indy, but one that gives good warranty - on parts and service - based on

stories here of failed TB kit parts or components leading to costly and time consuming re-dos or worse. Maybe have the indy use Audi parts - they have a 12/12000 parts and labor warranty, but I don't know if that includes indy installation or just dealer. I would ask. Then, you can order from Carson@Riverside but have your indy install. Carson gives very aggressive discounting. I go aftermarket for many items, filters, brakes or an axle, but critical internal components lead me to think OEM.

Default If you're willing to drive to Tacoma...

My indy did a good job, and the warranty (for the $4500) second one was impressive. email me if you want more info.

Default I can't imagine what I would have paid going to an indy, forget the dealer.

I did probably 5 TB's on the 2 12Vs I owned before the allroad and never had a bearing failure. The one thing that bugged me was the water pumps only lasted 50K. After researching coolants last year I can attribute the early water pump failures to leaks in the coolant system I ignored. Even small leaks will cause long life coolants like G12 to each the water pump seals. Live and learn. I hope this timing belt job lasts 105-120K miles just like new..

FWIW I love jobs like this so I can justify new tool purchases. Even will all the new tools I probably saved 1K on the job I did. Fingers are crossed.
