Default In tip mode, sometimes, the upshift does not work... Any ideas?

This only happens sometimes, I can't seem to determine why or when it happens.

Roughly 10-15% of the time, when I try to upshift in tip mode it does not work. Neither of the steering wheel buttons or pressing up on the shift level will make it upshift. I've tried to hold the buttons for a while, hit them soft, quick, hard, nothing works.

Oh, and so far, this has only happened when attempting shifting from 2nd to 3rd or from 3rd to 4th..

When this happens the only way I can get the car to upshift is to put the tip back in automatic mode (I have not tested pushing to the redline, yet).

This also never happens with downshifting, downshifting always works (unless of course I'm at 5000rpms or something).

I have a vagcom and there are no codes.

I have a warranty, so I think I will be taking it to the dealer soon, but of course (I'm willing to bet) they will be unable to reproduce the problem.

Side Note: When my CV joint was toast and the car would shake widly under acceleration they were "unable to reproduce the problem". I don't get that at all...

Anyway, any ideas or things to check, look for, test or say to the dealer would be appreciated, thanks.

Default Do you have a Tip chip installed or bone stock?

Here is something you could try; your TCU is located under the floor in the Passenger side, unplug it over night and reconnect the next morning. The TCU will be in a learning mode after reconnect and adapt again.

And IIRC, there is a Transmission switch on the Trans that has very little margin for error, apperently it is adjustable, so your Tech might have something to check out, if this one is off specs then your symptoms would be explained.

I wish I knew the wiring diagram for the Tip, if the steering wheel buttons run a connection to a switch located in your shift lever and contacts are worn out or corrosive then it would explain why neither of them takes any input.

Keep us in loop please, this sounds like a challenging and complex problem.......best of luck!

.....oh, did I mention that remote troubleshooting is like a shot in the dark? ;-)

Default I prefer the "peeling an onion" analogy...you find one thing and fix it and

then something else materializes so you fix that and so on...no real way of seeing the underlying layers except to peel away at them one by one. Works with debugging computers too....only exception and this is true with cars too is that sometimes you get to look really smart when the same symptom/error comes up again...but even at that it may not be the same underlying cause...oh complex problems.

Default IIRC this is controlled by a magnetic contact..

under the shift lever. While I may be totally off base, there may be some dirt of dust lodged in this area.

In any event you have a warranty, take the tech/writter for a ride so they can experieince it.

Default This happened to me but only on the MFSW buttons...

The TIP stick always worked. This only happened twice (in 9 months) an each time I pulled over and restarted the car and the issue went away. I wonder if recoding your TCU to 00032 would force it to reset the way it works. Perhaps a try. This puts it in 'sport' mode. Write down your existing code so you can put back if you want. This is assuming you have, or have access to, VAG-COM.

Default Bone stock. Thanks for the shot in the dark, I will pulling the plug after I try and recode it

as alrightroad suggested...

Simply becuase I would not know where to start digging to find the TCU, and recoding it sounds like fun anyway. If that does not work I will will try your suggestion. I will also see if I can squirt compressed air everywhere and blow out any dust...

Thanks again though, this forum is amazing. I asked this question right before I left work and by the time I got home there were 3 suggestions.... I would be lost with out the AR think tank, you guys (and girl) should be on the AOA payroll...

Default Do all signals get routed through the console contacts or something? Because when this problem

happens it happens to both paddles on the steering wheel and the console shifter, either they all work, or none work...

Default For what it's worth it - some advise from the Bentley......

Check the Tiptronic Switch -F189
Can be checked in "Read measuring value block"

Group 003 thru 013 seem to give you most of the needed information via VAG.

In case of malfunctions, first check whether solenoid is properly attached to slide -C- , replace slide if necessary. Only replace selector lever display and integrated printed circuit after checking all wiring and connections. For vehicles with Tiptronic steering wheel also check buttons on steering wheel.

================================================== ==========
Here is a pic of the location of the Transmission Range switch, it is prone to fail, so worth having it checked

Default The field 3 of measuring block 011 will show "Up switch" when you shift selector lever toward

front or you press the (+) button on the steering wheel. Maybe this can let you make sure if the TCU receive the up-shift command.

The other thing is that the TCU will not execute the up-shift command if the current engine speed is too slow.

Quick Reply: In tip mode, sometimes, the upshift does not work... Any ideas?
