Default I think I read someone posting about similar symptoms...

IIRC I think it turned out to be the tranny's valve body...

Good Luck!

Default thanks to all ...

she goes in on Thursday so I'll keep you posted.
This is why my new everyday ride is the new baby avant with MANUAL transmission. She's cute and fun but not as smooth as big sis allroad.

I had a similar problem and it ended up been low transmission fluid

Default Wait a minute. Hard shifting into reverse on a hill = bad transmission? I guess mine is dying then.

Seriously, is this a symptom of a ticking transmission bomb? I've always had automatics that are hard to shift into reverse (the allroad does it with a loud thump) because of the pressure on the parking pawl. I never thought this was unusual because the explanation was obvious, and I set the hand brake to avoid it. In the long run, it might be bad for the transmission, but I hope it's not a symptom of impending failure in the Audi.

On the other hand, I have noticed that the allroad has an excessive amount of slop in Park. if I'm even on a slight incline, after I put it in Park, it rolls back a good 4-6 inches and/or rocks back and forth as it bounces off the pawl. Again, I just set the parking brake to avoid it.

Should I worry?

Default This is how mine started.. got progressively worse until it was like a bucking bronco

engaging/disengaging in reverse on steep inclines. New tranny/tc everything was needed.

Hello: I recently went through this same issue w/ my 2001 Allroad. 76k miles. Great condition, but had trouble in reverse on an incline. Turns out, the rear drum on the Transmission was cracked. The dealer quoted me nearly 10k to fix transmission, minor oil leaks, & a new timing belt. They refused to entertain the extended warranty, as it ran out in 07/07. Told me to call Audi directly if I wanted to complain.

took to an aftermarket audi shop, replaced everything for almost 1/2 of what the dealer quoted. Not only that, they said the rear drum has a design flaw (grooves are too close to the top, which means cracking is inevitable). Anyway, for what it's worth, after nearly 7k in more repairs (tranny, timing belt, o2 sensor, turbo return check valves), it's running smoothly. I am still getting the Cat Efficiency codes showing up, hoping to get that replaced under warranty (8 yr/80k). We'll see.

Hello, I fear that stretching my 2004's useful life may finally be over. I've had the TC code for a couple of years now, but this week it slipped for the first time. From an uphill stop it rolled backwards when I hit the gas. It also shifts hard, especially as really slow speed, either accelerating or decelerating. bang.

Should I buy a rebuilt TC and do the job myself? The stealership just quoted my "minimum $3,800" to replace the TC ($11k for to include the transmission).

Or will that not solve the problem? Will it solve the failure and I'd just live with the harsh shifting? The last time I pulled the pan there was zero metal on the magnets.

Thank you.

As the poster to which you replied specified that TC job would not be sufficient, I doubt you want to replace the TC without looking at the transmission.

Find a transmission shop that is ZF-certified. It will cost you much less than at the Audi dealership.

It's always difficult figuring out whether comments are accurate or even if they are technically accurate, how critical it is to go by the book. My struggle is always figuring out who's right and who's mistaken.

For instance, in theory I could swap out the TC and solve 95% of the problem and live happily for years with occasional sharp shifts with a lot of labor and just $600.

Or, as you imply, the TC might solve one problem, but the transmission could go next month.

I'm looking for a shop right now ...
