Default Wheel size question

I hope it's not a stupid one that's been asked a thousand times (I couldn't find anything by searching). I know you're not supposed to run different size wheels front/rear, and I understand why, but then I look at the 911 Turbo (or Carrera 4) and they run much bigger wheels at the back vs the front.

So, if i get wheel DIAMETERS that are the same, can I run a slightly wider wheel at the back? Will i get a TON (more) of understeer because of the wider wheel? If my front/rear wheels are slightly larger/smaller, will the quattro drive get screwed up (again see curio above with the 911 turbo)?

Default You are correct, you are playing with Quattro here and not with electronic diffs, so the entire

geometry must be considered and taken into account.
In theory and by mathematical calculations, yes, it seems doable - but is it practical? Personally, I don't think it's good for an allroad.

You would challenge the front and rear differentials and the entire drive, perhaps the ABS and ESP function as well. Would the spare tire still fit or did you plan to go larger than 17"?

Before you attempt do try this, have someone create a photoshop picture of the proposed result.....and I'll bet you wont like the looks, it's not a 69 Chevelle ;-)

Maybe some of the pro's here can offer a opinion, in any case, I'd consult an expert on that.

Default electronic diffs!!

OK that explains a lot. I never thought of that!!

I can't find a wheel I like that will fit my allroad this that has a lip in the required diameter (and that is both reasonalby stong and light). There are a few nice ones, but they won't fit on the front of the car. Oh well, it's not a deal breaker, I love my car.

I'm getting winter shoes for the stock wheels this fall, and then new wheels/tires for the car next spring. I'm still torn between the weight (and price!!)advantage of the 17' and the 'plus' look of an 18.

Default Why don't they fit on the front of the AR? As long as the ET is correct and they are 5x112 then it

shouldn't be any trouble. Did you browse through the picture poster of the community here? There are some nice examples.

Default too wide

I did browse the picture poster. Thanks, there are some nice examples, you're right. The ones I was after were 9.5 wide and had a really fat 3" lip. I was told by the dealer that they'll fit the back fine, but that i'll have rubbing issues at the front. So I'm likely going with 8.5's all around even though they only have a .5" lip (go figure, you'd think that it would only be about a quarter inch smaller), or some RS4's and skip the lip issue altogether.
