Who here has done the Auto/Tip conversion to a manual tranny?...
I've got a client/friend who is looking to do the same to his newly acquired 01 allroad and I mentioned to him that I thought I read on the boards here that someone had done it.
Thanks in advance.

Your friend should have bought an allroad with a manual transmission
Sure, it can be done (and someone has done it), but it'll cost more than selling the auto and buying a manual car. He'll have a factory piece, not a conversion. No matter how well done the conversion might be, it ain't factory.
Cost? Maybe a third of the car's present value? More? He'll be way upside down on the car before you even get the engine out.
The manual cars are out there and they're not expensive any more. He can be driving it tomorrow with none of the "teething pains" of a conversion.
Just some thoughts.

Tell him to sell the car and buy a 6MT, unless he wants to spend over 10K just for fun...
that means if he buys all the parts new and pays average labor; used parts and bribes to the Technician might get him down to around 5-6K......my advise - don't fix it if it's not broken.

Thanks for the input, secret is he paid VERY little for it and he's an Audi tech...
That and he's young and I remember those days. Heck I used to race a car both club and pro and I wish I had the money back but that's just what you do when you are young and addicted to cars. Rally Nutcase, he may be contacting you.

There's a 2001 6MT for sale in MN for $9K (from a dealer!)
No major issues (a couple local clubmembers have looked at it -- turbos fine, bags seem okay, etc.) and complete. Has about 111K on the odo.
