Default Yet another s4/allroad comparo...with a NEW twist.

Hi there,
I am interested in purchasing an allroad tip and have read about tip/turbo lag and the tip chip. I still have a few questions, however. My mom has a 2004 a4 3.0 cab. Tiptronic. I can live with the transmission in that; is the allroad distintively worse? Also, is there a programming difference between the s4 and allroad transmissions? Does the b5 s4 tip suffer from "tip lag"? Could one use the vag-com tool to set the AR transmission to s4 settings? Also, if I were to get a tip chip, would I have to take it out every time I went to the dealer? If so, how hard is this? Is it easy enough to do by myself? I am sure all of these questions have been answered before and I apologize, but a search for "tip" or "s4" on the forums reveals about 9 thousand pages. Thanks in advance!

I think you could leave the Tip chip in and never have to worry about it unless they need to VAG it.

Alright, but I would want my used car to be CPO, and wouldn't want them to void my warranty. Is it easy enough to take out by myself? Does it just plug in? Do I have to take out the dash?

Default My understanding is it's behind the rt-front kick panel & is plug-in.

Haven't replaced mine, though.

Default Lag in allroad with tip

The lag isn't that bad in the A4 3.0 because there are no turbos. I have an older A4 with the 2.8 Tip and it's not that bad it's there but I can live with it. When you add the Tip lag to turbo lag it becomes a problem. This is why people are happy with the 4.2 that is only available as a Tip. Since there are no turbos you only have the Tip lag and that is ok. I hae never driven the B5 S4 with Tip to have any feed back as to how bad lag is there but the fact that it is alot lighter may help but I'm sure people complain about it. All the S4 drivers that I know wouldn't touch a Tip and don't want anything to do with them. The only S4 I have driven was a heavily modded 6 speed and all I could say was wow.

My feeling is that all audi transmissions are crap and that when I have to make the choice, I'll probably want the one I have to deal with less (tip).
