Default Back in an Audi. And Where Do you Charge Away From Home?

I'm back in an Audi after a six-year absence, my 3rd Audi with a 2019 e-tron, purchased today, 4-February-2025.

I searched but was surprised not to find anything regarding charging recommendations away from home. What provider(s) does everyone use for charging on the road? I don't plan on road-tripping the e-tron that much, mostly running my mother to my sisters house (VA-NJ) on occasion. I'd just like to find a good provider as a go-to, and not have to load 7 different apps on my phone and try to figure out where to charge when away from home.

Coming from a plug-in hybrid, a Cadillac ELR (a Chevy Volt on steroids and a tuxedo), I use ChargePoint at work with slow 6.6kwh chargers, but I'm wondering what is the best provider overall when away from home as far as fast charging? I'm hoping to find some safe places to charge at 2am when coming home to VA from NJ. I think I'm looking for number of options at this point for convenience.

Virginia's HV charging infrastructure is improving. For locating and researching charger infrastructure, recommend you create accounts on Plugshare and A Better Route Planner, set them up for your car particulars. In reality, you'll probably need several accounts for charging to be the most convenient. Mostly, I use Electrify America, EV Go and Chargepoint. Do most of your charging at home and you'll be happy.

We usually use Electrify America or Chargepoint.

This really depends on where you are going on a road trip. We took two long road trips of around 6000 miles each. We used Electrify American the most followed by Charge point. But we also used Shell and Francis. We charged at a Ford dealership once at one of these new Ford chargers. They do not require an app, just a credit card.

Aside from CPOs already mentioned I have the Tesla App on my phone and have stopped at the Magic Doc station at
Grand Resort Hotel Mt Laurel
915 NJ-73,
Mt Laurel Township, NJ 08054, USA
Where there are 40 Magic Doc dispensers.
Later this year Audi should get access to the whole Tesla SuC Network.
You will probably only need one stop from NJ to Va depending on the total distance of the trip.
Sounds like a cake walk for the etron.

I second the comment about Ford. If you can find them, they are a great experience. Just a bit pricey!

I think we are a few years away from this being a realistic goal. I rarely use the e-tron for road trips, but already have accounts with:
  • Electrify America
  • ChargePoint
  • EV Connect
  • ZEF
  • EverCharge
  • Tesla
  • Circle K Charge
  • Blink Charging
You can have every intention of sticking to a simple route plan using your preferred provider, but in my experience every trip requires at least one unexpected stop and pretty soon you have $25-$40 deposits with multiple providers.

Thanks everyone for the replies and information. Looks like the unavoidable with a dozen apps to sign up for and track. I was hoping to avoid as one user put, "$25-$40 deposits with multiple providers". Coming from a PHEV, I already have a Charge Point account which I'll continue to use, hopefully less at work than the previous use at home. I have signed up for a EA account as I see that's popular as well. And I learned we have some limited use to Tesla through the MagicDock for now. Virginia from my understanding still hasn't signed a proper agreement with distributors for "reselling electricity". Where I work is a flat $1 an hour, but limited to 6.6kw. A little more than charging at home from what I understand.

This weekend I found out the L2 charger in my garage bought 6 years ago is limited to 16A, which makes sense now that I think about it because my old Cadillac could only charge at 13A. I have a 40A Autel unit coming this week for a weekend install hopefully to speed things up at home.

One other question as I learn my new Audi is regarding the personalization. Can you still use the older methods of interfacing with the computers onboard? I still have a cable and probably the software somewhere in a closet somewhere for VAGCOM I think it was called that I used on my previous Audis. I need to clear out the previous owner as the key user. I also bought a used spare key fob to add. Hopefully I'm not at the mercy of dealerships for the newer vehicles.

.
Agree with all other recommendations, I primarily use EA. Just a note, I have a 40amp home charger, but when I try to run it at full 40amps the circuit breaker trips, so I can only run it at max 33amps. You may have to check the wiring and breaker installed at your home.
