Ceramic Coating
And a counterpoint:
I was looking at my etron the other day and it was quite grimy looking when parked next to my other cars, despite having been detailed a couple of days prior and having been driven for just about 100 miles or so, in good weather. It's darker (Manhattan Gray), so it'd expect it to show dirt and grime more than the others (which are silver and white), but nonetheless, it looked quite filthy in comparison. I gave it a thorough bath and then proceeded to coat it with this new Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic Wax.
I've used this product on my other cars and it's pretty decent. It does indeed help the cars stay cleaner and they do clean more easily. Like a ceramic coating, it doesn't provide any protection against impact damage from rocks and debris, but otherwise I think it performs quite alright. As far as I can tell, the difference is in the longevity and perhaps convenience (although, if you look at all the products they sell these days, aimed at protecting your ceramic protection layer, one wonders how much convenience there is). Based on the experience so far, I'm going to stay with this cheapo method.
Another product that does pretty much the same thing but seems to last a bit less is Meguiar's Quick Detail.
For reference, here's a drive-by picture of my other car, being left waiting at the dealer as I was taking the eTron home. In this picture, it had not been washed in 2-3 weeks.
This one has never seen a professional detail in the 6-years I've had it, just manual washes (and on desperate occasions an automatic wash) plus the occasional coating with the Meguiar's products I mentioned. To me, it still looks great.
