Barring an actual update fileset... is it possible to trick the MMI into thinking it's in a different region say by tethering it to an external network connection?

Sure, but you would not be able to drive using any NAV features for seven days at a time per state as you updated that region. But if you were to be parked for seven days at a time, you can spoof the telematics module.

Seems like a dumb restriction for sure. What do people do where they switch regions across a map boundary everyday? I personally know loads of people that commute from their homes in Florida into Alabama and vice versa on a daily basis.
