Your assumption is correct. Audi won't retrofit. They did every last 2019 owner dirty with false promises of upgrades. Then, they released new hardware in the 2021+ OG e-tron models and left the 2019 people in the dust. Audi is just a mess when it comes to software these days.

I wonder if it is capable of a retrofit, meaning if I was willing to pay out of pocket whether it would be possible. I am not saying it would be worth it, I am just wondering.

There is a company out of Ukraine that will retrofit anything Audi MMI/CPU for you. However, you will have to wait for the war to end. (A factory in Ukraine used to produce all of Audi's wiring harnesses.) Anyway, once the war is over, You can upgrade MMI's and software if you wish.
