Default Trip Report (10/15 - 10/22) Picking up an RS4 ... with pix

The whole trip went really well. Everything was smooth and organized. If I really had to be picky, only one mistake was made, and that was rectified by Kathy at Audi immediately, and didn't affect anything.

I had combined this vacation/Audi delivery with a business trip. So, I left Houston earlier than normal and flew to Amsterdam. Then a colleague and I drove to Leverkusen, near Cologne for a meeting. After that, I was on vacation, and took the German high-speed train from Cologne to Munich.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3155.jpg">

Those trains are amazing. Fast and smooth. They take you right from the center of one town, to the center of another. You can show up 15 minutes before scheduled departure time, and walk right on. They're are also usually cheaper than flying, and with 1/1000th the hassle.

I spent the weekend (10/13 and 10/14) in Munich enjoying the town...

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3181.jpg">

...and going to the Deutsches Museum, the best science and industry museum in the world.

Sunday evening, I checked into the Kempinski Hotel at Munich Airport. It's very nice, typical business hotel.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3333.jpg">

At the airport, there's an open area that's outside, but covered by a high roof. There's also an Audi Forum there, but on a sunday evening, it was closed. There are several restraunts, including a nice beergarden. There is also an S-bahn line to Munich Haubtbahnhof (main rail station), but they're building a high-speed maglev link for the future.

The next morning my driver, Dirk, showed up right on time in a new Q7 to drive me to the Ingolstadt Audi Forum. It took about an hour, and we drove past field after field of hops being grown. Ingolstadt is a fairly sleepy factory town, so I'd strongly recommend staying at the airport hotel and taking the S-bahn into Munich if you fly to Munich.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3355.jpg">

That's the same forum pic everyone seems to have. There's a big open plaza outside the forum, that's gated. So after getting your car, you can park out there before leaving, but it's not public parking.

I checked in, got my VIP wristband, and they took my suitcases, giving me claim checks. The bags would later appear beside my car when I took posession.

They also have small lockers where you can lock things up for a short time (like cameras, your paperwork, coat, etc.). You put in a 1 euro coin, but you get that back when you return the key to open it back up. So, they're free, but with a 1 euro deposit for the key.

The deilvery floor...

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3377.jpg">

The floor is not open to all. You wait on the mezzanine above, and when your name is at the top of the big board, you are escorted down the stairs to your waiting car.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3386.jpg">

I'm finally at the top of the list! And, the car is waiting below.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3394.jpg">

On the tour, I met quaTTrings, and we had the same delivery time. Our cars were side by side.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3389.jpg">

Wolfgang showed up (the same guy who checked me in), and I did the perp-walk down the stairs to the car.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3410.jpg">

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3485.jpg">

He went over all the functions and I had time to look over the car thoroughly. Everything was perfect. There was even a bottle of water in the cupholder. I loaded up the suitcases. There were a couple things to sign, insurance, registration, and receipt for pickup. Funny thing is, all those papers Audi sends you...they never looked at any of them, all those authorities for this and that.

Then I drove out of the delivery center and into the plaza. There I set everything up and got the GPS booted up and finding itself. It was about 3:30pm and I told the GPS to take me to the Innsbruck Hilton. Getting out of Ingolstadt would have been tricky by myself even with a map. About 10 minutes later I was on the Autobahn heading south.

I got to the hotel, and was looking forward to reading all the cool stuff in the manuals. When I got to that, I discovered that the were all in German. A quick email to Kathy and the right ones were FedEx'd to my home, and waiting for me when I got back. My salesman also offered to have his parts department order them, but Kathy beat him to the punch.

Next day, I drove east from Innsbruck to the famous Grossglocknerstrasse high alpine road. It was just like the pictures, and even more beautiful with the leaves turning.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3415.jpg">

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3422.jpg">

It winds up the Alps from the Innsbruck valley into Italy.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3423.jpg">

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3429.jpg">

I took a break at the top and had lunch.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3432.jpg">

The next day, I drove west to Neuschwanstein Castle. The castle was a tourist trap, but the roads crossing the mountains from Austria to Germany were great.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3437.jpg">

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3443.jpg">

The weather was forecast to get wet and snowy, so I headed to Stuttgart in an attempt to punch-under the front and get to the nice weather behind it. It rained most of the trip to Stuttgart, but stopped at the end, and the plan worked. I did have a couple nice days.

I drove up to Neckarsulm to see the site and Audi Forum there.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/125079/aimg_3567.jpg">

On monday (10/22), I dropped off the car in Sindelfingen (a suburb of Stuttgart). They did need one of the papers from Audi, specifically, the voucher for return shipment.

The papers tell you to schedule dropoff 4 days in advance. When I called 3 days in advance, I got the impression they couldn't have cared less. I asked if they wanted my name, and they said something to the effect of "ok, sure, why not". I'm fairly certain I could have just showed up without any notice.

A cab took me to the local train station. From there back to Stuttgart, then Amsterdam. The vacation part was over, back to work. Amsterdam, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Tokyo, Houston. Finally home.

When I got here, the title, plates, and English manuals were waiting for me. Now, just waiting on the car.

My total timeline thus far:

7/12 Order car and place deposit
7/16 Order into computer due to software snafu
8/7 Received commission number and actual production date (9/24) from Audi
8/8 Received welcome package

Default I know this is asking a lot, but...

I need some ideas for roads to travel, places to stay, etc. while in Germany. Everyone has great pics, but is there a way that some people could share their itineraries and/or a map of their journey?

I'd find that exceptionally helpful, and if some people can produce said information, I'd respond in kind when I get back from my ED pickup.

Default I second the motion...

I'm sitting here drooling over all of the pictures, but I don't know where they are at. Names of hotels would be a real plus.

Default Additional Information

You have lots of time after you order the car, and before you pick it up. I went through several different plans before settling on one.

Advice: Get to know Google Maps. It's awesome.

Initially, I was going to drive city to city, about 5 hours per day. Eventually, I gave up on that. I decided to spend two or 3 days each at cities located near lots of stuff I wanted to see. There are great roads in Bavaria and western Austria. I wanted to drive nice roads, see some things, but mostly drive cool roads.

I also wanted to maximize use of hotel points. I have tons of Hilton HHonors points, so I chose Innsbruck because there is a Hilton there and they had secure underground parking.

On Google Maps, I marked places I wanted to see/drive, and then just looked for a city near them. That led me to Innsbruck.

Innsbruck is in an alpine valley, and there is an autobahn heading east/west from there. South of that are many nice roads heading south into the Alps. The Grossglocknerstrasse is one of them. It's a toll road, but is really kind of a road/national park. It's prefectly maintained, and there are lots of places to stop/eat/rest/take pix, etc.

<a href="http://www.grossglockner.com/">Grossglockner website</a>

<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=5083549645944427007,47.2772 40,12.826200%3B7460630685340776646,46.879340,12.88 0540&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Glocknerstra%C3%9Fe+ %4047.277240,+12.826200&daddr=47.09537,12.834778&m ra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&sll=47.131819,12.895203 &sspn=0.75489,1.463928&ie=UTF8&om=1&ll=47.131819,1 2.895203&spn=0.75489,1.463928&source=embed">Grossg lockner Map</a>

It starts near Bruck, and goes across the mountain range.

There are others to the east also, Otztal, Kaunertal, etc. They all climb from the Inn river valley floor up the mountains to the south. Study the area on Google maps, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I also went to Neuschwanstein Castle.

<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=15092135130840672432,47.557 910,10.741050&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=47.262609,1 1.396384&daddr=Colomannstra%C3%9Fe%2FSt2016+%4047. 557910,+10.741050&mra=mi&mrsp=0,1&sz=17&sll=47.262 238,11.395226&sspn=0.005883,0.011437&ie=UTF8&om=1& ll=47.382544,11.056366&spn=0.751324,1.463928&sourc e=embed">Road to Neuschwanstein</a>

The twisty part of the road was beautiful. I could have just turned around and driven back. But, I was there, so I went and saw the castle.

I had only made hotel reservations through Innsbruck, since I wasn't sure where I wanted to go. At least in October, finding hotels was not a problem.

Here are the locations of the ED dropoff points, including the fora at Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm:

<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112669454656330509373. 0004374aa56a79377a4cd&om=1&ll=47.783635,6.899414&s pn=23.890231,46.845703&source=embed">Audi ED Dropoffs plus the two plants</a>

You want to end up near one of those (the blue ones / dropoff locations).

There was a front coming in from the north, and rain and frozen precip was forecast for Innsbruck. I had 3 choices. One, sit it out, two, run to the south ahead of it, and three, punch through it to the north northeast. I decided to head northeast to Stuttgart. There was a Hilton Garden Inn there with underground parking and reward availability. It was closer to Emden (for dropoff). and I could see the Mercedes museum, Neckarsulm, and maybe the Nurburgring. I also preferred to be within a few hours of Amsterdam by rail since that's where I had to be on Tuesday for my next flight. It rained going there, but not too bad, and no ice. After that front passed, the next day was nice, so the plan worked. I went to Neckarsulm to see the Audi plant there. Unfortunately, the weather was bad the day I had set aside for the Nurburgring. I dropped it off on monday near Stuttgart.

I could easily have enjoyed another week. I could afford the RS4, but not by alot, so I wanted to keep the trip costs down. That's why I tried to use HHonors points for everything, which I was able to do.

There was more traffic than I thought there would be. I would really avoid going there during high-season (June-August). September/October is good. Winter is winter, but April/May should also be nice.

The Grossglockner closes today, and stays closed until early May.

There's also the German High Alpine Road.

<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=1020520755653738094,47.8132 40,12.369430%3B15056841481284786266,47.628380,13.0 02340&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=B305%2FPriener+Stra %C3%9Fe+%4047.813240,+12.369430&daddr=47.666312,12 .545013+to:B305%2FBahnhofstra%C3%9Fe+%4047.628380, +13.002340&mra=dpe&mrcr=0,1&mrsp=1&sz=11&sll=47.72 4545,12.692642&sspn=0.373218,0.731964&ie=UTF8&om=1 &ll=47.724545,12.692642&spn=0.373218,0.731964&sour ce=embed">German High Alpine Road Map</a>

I didn't have time for that. Maybe I'll go back and do an Audi Driver's day trip after my checkbook is out of the ICU.

To drive the Autobahns in Austria (and Switzerland too) you have to buy a little window sticker (a vignette). I just stopped at a gas station on the German autobahn before the border and bought one (I think it was 8 euro for 10 days).

BTW, gas (the good stuff, 98 or 100 RON) was about $8.50/gallon.

There were lots of nice little hotels in all the little towns. In the off season, you could probably just show up at one and stay there.

Audi ED gives you a German guidebook in the welcome package that has all kinds of stuff to do in Germany.

Default Still... that's a pantload of work and not targeted at driving enthusiast activities

I think that being able to tap into the ED BT here would be extremely valuable. Again, what routes to take, where to stay, etc.

Seriously, this would be an AWESOME resource to fellow Audi enthusiasts...

Default Nice report and write-up!

Great meeting you at the Forum, it was a fun day going through the factory. You're not joking about it being tricky to get out of Ingolstadt. I must have driven around the entire factory at twice before finally finding the Autobahn toward Rothenburg. Next time, I will definitely bring a GPS of some sort if Audi still hasn't sorted out the Euro - US Nav issue. Looks like you'll have your car in hand with plenty of time before Thanksgiving!
