Any tips on reattaching the rear view mirror?

On the later cars, the plate that goes on the glass is hard to distinguish...
from the post that connects it to the rearview mirror, and if anything it's harder to remove. The little tiny silver ridge sticking out of the back of the black metal piece is it, believe it or not. The first time the mirror fell off on my 95.5 sedan I took it to two different shops, both of which tried (and failed miserably) to reattach the entire mirror because we couldn't tell the base was actually two separate pieces.
You need to get a good grip on it and twist it- direction of twist doesn't matter, since it's symmetrical. Twist it about 20 degrees, and the plate should pop loose. I'm not positive, but I don't think you can over-twist it. The problem is just getting a good enough grip to twist it in the first place- I went through my entire pliers collection before I found something that would work, and even then it was a major pain.
Once I got it off, I drilled two small holes in it at 3 and 9 o'clock- they don't interfere with normal fitment, but the next time it fails I'll be able to remove the plate with a pin wrench.

They didn't remove it on the S6 mirror at the shop I went to, it was stuck on within..
...a minute or two.
What's the temperature you're attempting to do this at? Doesn't work below a certain temp.
When I did it with the kit from an auto parts place on my '95 90 it was warm out and also was staying attached on its own within a minute or two...(same mirror, nothing to remove - only pre-'95s seem to have the seperate piece you remove and glue on first.
