The slots at the side of the unit release the spring clips when the tool is inserted. ECS tuning has a video in the tool section showing how to use the tools. However, few people need to spend $30 for the kit when the ebay $3 tools work just fine.

My garage was dark and I missed the slots you guys mentioned. I managed to pull the radio out using cut off zip ties! I had to wiggle them around until I felt the radio un-clip.

I'll be ordering a new radio now.
