Default Accessing ECU?

Has anyone had success in accessing their ECU without cutting the carpet? If this is possible, I'm sure the process is quite a bit more involved but I'm interested in hearing if anyone has succeeded in this.
I have a 1995 S6.
Thanks,

The carpet is partially cut from the factory. Just cut it. You will never see the difference. Follow info in the links here:

I would not want to attempt trying to get at the ECU without cutting the carpet. It's meant to be cut... just make sure to cut it far enough down (with a razor knife), otherwise the carpet will continue to tear as you wrestle to fold it down to get at the ECU. And there are two plastic covers over the ECU that can be a real pain to get re-installed...so having the carpet out of the way is helpful.
