Anyone know if I can bore-out my S6?
Just rec'd word that my #3 cylinder is damaged, a sparkplug came loose, some of it broke off and dropped into the cylinder...likely damage to the wall +/- the head....they want to replace the motor, I want to know if I can bore it out instead, not sure if the 2.2 has any room for expansion, or where to get the replacement parts...thanks

they've gone as big as 2.6...
but the redline is under 5500... Depending on how deep the internal damage is, you idea would work. Then get some new JE's, reducing the compression, and blow some huge boost. Should run 400hp pretty easily...

Uh, I don't think it's BORED though....
Isn't that 2.6 stroked instead? The whole reason the stock car is a 2.2 instead of a 2.3 (like the naturally aspirated versions) is that the cylinder walls are thicker but the external dimensions of the block are the same. Kind of like how the normal Audi 6-cylinder was 2.8liter, but the twin turbo is 2.7 liter due to sleeving (?) the cylinders.
By boring out this motor you will make the cylinder walls thinner. No idea how dangerous this ends up being, but just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Anyone know if I can bore-out my S6?
A decent (OK, a pretty well-equipped shop) shop can drop a small fiberoptic camera thingy in there (think surgery) and get a look at any surface damage before taking anything apart. If that checks out, pull the head and get a real look. Then decide.
Or get the wreckage out of there, heli-coil the plug-hole thread, get a new sparkplug, doublecheck the torque on the OTHER four plugs and start 'er up and see what happens after you do a compression and leakdown test.
Don't let ANYONE talk you into doing expensive work like replacing a motor before checking everything out first to know what you're really dealing with as well as talking with a few other shops to get their take on the matter as far as repair of whatever may need repair is concerned.

Thanks, Jim and others
Thanks for the info Jim, Jason, and Padrig. The shop replaced the coil which blew apart from the impact of the plug shooting off the cylinder, but apparently some debris fell into the cylinder.
Jim, the shop found some oil in the cylinder after running the engine (replaced the coil, and the valve cover gasket), also no compression, which might be explained by a valve. I haven't seen it yet (broke down out of town), but the top of the cylinder was dinged up a bit, and the shop thinks the edge of the cylinder might have taken a beating, affecting the rings, perhaps. I may head down there to pull the head, myself, this weekend. we're looking for a nice used s-6 engine now... your advice is very helpful...feel free to drop me anymore ideas...Colin.
