BMW AWD versus AUDI? Torsion vesus electronic?
Luckily I still have my UR S6 Avant and Coupe Quattro which are full mechanical Torsion . I was thinking of looking at the new BMW X1. I drive aggressively in the snow such as powering through turns and rallying up canyons in the Rockies. Does anyone own a BMW or can chime if the newest of systems (X1 allegedly has an updated version of X Drive) is going to disappoint me? I know the earlier BMW X Drives would essentially slam the brakes on to wheels that detect slip preventing me from powering through corner of intersection where power might be your friend. Do the new ones handle in the same way or is the braking not noticeable? Of course the BMW guys all feel their system is superior.

The out-going X1 is a RWD platform, so the AWD to my knowledge is BMW's usual RWD-based AWD.
The new X1 is based on their small van FWD platform. Since it is a transverse engine and FWD, I assume the AWD is haldex-based like everyone else's.

I agree on the manual. I have 3 manuals currently and keep drooling over some of the new cars hoping for a stick. The new X1 is pretty nice looking honestly but if it had a manual or TDI would seal the deal. Love the S6!

A good friend of mine just bought a 2016 GTI, so we traded off - he drove my S6 and I drove the GTI. It was eye opening - that car is an Audi more than most modern Audis I've driven. Really a true driver's car. That third pedal makes all the difference.
The clutch was super light and the brakes are like instant-on, and maybe the steering was a bit numb (all these electronics between me and the road), but what a hoot. I've been planning to buy a Golf SportWagen TDI manual as my daily.. but I may end up with a GTI.
