Driving Friday night, as I went to accelerate and make a lane change, the check engine light came on and the engine died, everything else still running (lights, heat, etc.) As I tried to pull over to the shoulder, CE light goes out and engine running again.

First and only time that has happened and the car was running OK for the next two days after that.

1995 S6 Avant, ~95500 miles, all regular maintenance performed. Only item changed in the last 2000 miles was an upgrade to IA Stage III+ ecu.

Any ideas as to what may have caused this or where I can start looking (yes, I STFU, but I'm not engine saavy enough to know what i'm looking for). Need to find/fix the problem before I get stranded on a long snowboard trip.
