Default first brake application is significantly softer than the second and third

like...the brake goes about twice the distance on the first pump than it does on the subsequent ones.

failing bomb? what happens if it completely goes out...does that leave me sans brakes?

Default Meaning - the first pump has assist - the latter ones do not.

This is indeed a symptom of a 'waterlogged' bomb. (Almost out of nitrogen, but full of fluid.)

You still have all of the brakes you had before, even if the bomb goes completely flat.

You just have to do all of the work yourself - and depress the pedal just as far as if the bomb was still assisting you.

Eat your Wheaties!

Default wow, i always thought bomb just affected after the car is off (keeping pressure)

bombs suck, my 5000 had a bad bomb it didnt have one good pump after the car was off, and my brake pedal always felt the same (kinda hard )

Default You are partially correct -

Yes - it is to maintain applications after the car is off - but without the bomb - the pump would not produce pressurized fluid fast enough to provide assist for serious braking - meaning - get strong!

My subject line respone to Crapple was for his test case.

How worn are pads... Worn pads will make the pedal travel further down.

Default Only if something is wrong with your master cylinder

As your pads wear - the additional fluid that occupies the space vacated by the piston in the caliper comes from the master cyl resivour - unless the pedal does not come all of the way out after an application.
