Might buy another Audi(b5A4)for cheap...i mean cheap.
Seller sais the transmission makes a humming noise while in gear.
Symptoms from the seler:

"It makes a humming sound while in gear... I was told that the throw out bearing in the clutch is probably bad. Other than that it drives alright."

"The humming noise happens while in gear and in motion. I haven't felt any slips and no grinding while shifting. Sometimes while slowly reversing the car feels a little jumpy. And sometimes it needs a little bit of a push to go into gear, but that has always been the situation when the car is in the cold weather. Otherwise the car drives pretty much as usual."

"The humming happens in all gears and becomes a higher pitch at higher speeds. Noise doesnt happen while rolling in neutral. the "bit of a push" happens typically in 1st or reverse while at a complete stop and usually goes away after the car has been moving for a while and is warmed up.

Default Could be...

1. Throwout bearing started to weaken some time ago. That would cause balkiness going into gear. Throwout bearing shouldn't make noise while the clutch pedal is released when driving.
2. Then, because of balkiness, owner just kept pushing harder and harder to get it in gear. That stressed the synchros. Now there's wear inside the trans.

What's a new trans cost? Add that to your purchase price and then decide.

Trans failures are common on those cars. Sounds like trans.

Default Higher pitch humming at higher speed and not relative to engine speed points to the output shaft

side of the trans, the rear diff or something else in the drivetrain.

Default he wants $1000 for this (pix inside)

'97 2.8V6, 130k miles
Less then a year ago it got new tires,pads/rotors, new steering rack, new O2 sensors and he sais maintenance service too. MIL is on, humming noise in gear and sometimes(he said started today)the speedo would not give a reading.
I have not seen the car in person therefore didn't drive it either but i sure am going to tomorow.
for $1000 can i loose money really?
kbb trade in/fair condition is $3800

Default Beware unless the tranny comes from someone you know or has a warranty...

My A4 had a chipped 1st gear tooth (thanks dad) and I got a "deal" on a "low mile" one. Well that one was worse than the one I had. I ended up getting a brand new one on ebay for 400 shipped! Just keep an eye out and good stuff pops up but be careful.

Default Kinder, I have a good 01A tranny with 104k miles on my 12v parts car...

And you are just across the state I believe. (Philly, right?)

Let me know if you end up needing it, I won't charge you and arm and a leg
