Hey guys,.. got a few important questions ...(long)
First off just wanted to applaud the knowledge in this forum and how nice everyone is.. ive been around other forums and they are far less mature..
on to business
1. Going to be changing timing belt, water pump, pulleys and all that other good stuff quite soon. My question is, im going to be taking it somewhere to have it done(father doesnt want me to go away from the books to deal with car) how much am i looking to pay (approximate, i know it differs) including the price of the parts. Just wanted to get some insight as i have to talk it over with dad.
2. Shifting is making some noise including clunking during shifts and rattling when the car is out of gear and rolling. Also, the clutch pedal is giving some vibration when it is engaging with the push. Normally, what do these symptoms mean. Im guessing itss the clutch plates? if so how much does an opperation such as replacing those(again done by a mechanic, sadly) cost?
3. Above 3.5k rpms, there is a rattling from under rear of the car. Its pretty obvious that it is the exhaust pipes. From where i cant tell but if i had to quess, somewhere around mid car. Is this a grave problem in the making or just some metal that is vibrating.
Again thanks alot to everyone on this forum, im not a big poster but i read 2-3 times a day on average. I would post answers more, but i usually have none. heh.. thanks

a few answers
1) If your mechanic allows you to bring the parts you can get everything for around $100 bucks. search fapp99. I was very happy with everything. Labor could be between 500 and 800 (did it myself)
2) it sounds like you have a bad driveshaft, the two end cv joints cause the clunking/rattling and the center support bearing causes the vibration. Search driveshaft for more info, these have to be rebuilt. Or it could be the clutch.
3) have a muffler shop check it out, no charge
Good luck, these repairs can be pretty costly so do your research.

Answer #1 - timing belt is about $300 in parts and 8 hours labor
That includes t-belt, s-belt, coolant, water pump, crank seal, cam seal and idler pulley.
Optional - t-stat, cam position sensor and s-belt tensioner. I'd seriously consider the CPS, its a PITA to do later and if it fails, it will strand you.
Not sure what labor rates you are paying, but somewhere around $70-80 per hour.
The parts would be much cheaper if you bought them yourself.

I paid $700-800 USD for parts & labor at an independent
I don't remember the exact figure, or their labor rate. It was a shop outside Boston. That was with the ancillaries like water pump, crank seal, serp belt, etc. Make sure to have them do the full job, not just the timing belt. Get all that other stuff that is hard to get to out of the way. Oh, and you really want to find a competent shop that has seen 5 cyl. Audis before.
