Default Hey Marc, I don't really want to know the answer to this, but...

what are the chances I fried my ECU on one of the "start-up attempts?"

Default not very likely

it takes a lot to burn up the ecu. Its possible to burn things like coil drivers and injector drivers, but pretty damn tough to break the actual ECU itself.

If you really, really want to know if you can talk to the ECU, take it to a desktop PC with a real serial port, rig up a battery and connect it directly to the power connector on the ecu and verify communication over the serial port with the windows software.
