Quickfix start button
A few months ago I started having some issues when starting my car. It wasn't to bad but every so often I would have to jiggle the key a little to get the car to start I figured it was the same problem some of you guys have had with the starter switch and I pondered weather to change it or to make a press start button. But because I didn't drive my car that much I never got around to actually doing anything about it. While I was home in December the problems got worse until one day I was stuck at a mall for about half an hour trying to get the car started so I decided I would get it fixed the next day. The only problem is here in South Africa just about everybody closes down over Christmas so I couldn't get a new switch, that kinda made my decision for me I decided to go the button route at least temporarily. I took a few pics along the way but missed out some of the important ones.
First thing I did was take out the instrument cluster and the starter switch we found was broken. My dad had an old monetary on switch that was small enough so we decided to use that as the start button. to make this work we had to put in a relay which connected the starter wire from the original key starter switch to, ground, power and the new switch, The ground was relatively easy we found a ground on the body and ran a wire to that but the power was a little different we eventually worked out where we get power for the original key starter switch and ran a wire to that point (I guess we could have run a wire to the back or the old starter switch but we had enough trouble getting the starter wire out of the switch and its a little difficult to run a wire out the back of the old starter switch)
We ran the wire for the switch under the dash into the trays under the steering wheel.
The only problem with this is that the starter runs whenever you push the button weather the key is on or not and even after the engine is started.
Now I'm trying to decide if I should buy another switch and go back to the key start method or if I should put in another relay so the start button only works when the key is on.
I was also thinking of changing the button with one of the momentary on buttons above the radio
