So I know nothing about urS cars... and.. so.. what's this? A piece of trim or does it light up?

It's the infared sensor/reciever for the keyless entry system.

Not just on //scars Scott, 92-94 V8's have the infared keyless entry as well.

...that you could have just used the key?

Default pretty much, on my car, even with new batteries, it only works from about 5 feet away

and only when you point it at the sensor... But it's still better than scratching the door with the key or worrying about frozen locks.
