Also, a lot of ordinary midsize sedans make a lot more peak power than a stock S car: <img src="http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2007/10/26/automobiles/Sedan-Graphic.jpg">

Out of a bigger, normally aspirated, 15 year newer technology engine...
...you think any of those are as fun to drive?
C'mon...only one even has the option of a manual!

I owned the last generation Accord, it was not fun to drive
The engine had about 260hp but my UrS6 with about 290 is much, much faster. The difference is in the slushbox tranny and the torque curve on the Honda V6. You do not reach peak torque until the variable valve timing kicks in around 4000 rpm and then the engine gets loud, and not in a pleasing way. The tranny was my biggest complaint. You would hit the gas and count to three before the tranny would downshift.
Handling in the car was Buick like. It felt like it pushed through corners.
The good thing about it was that it was reliable, but then it was only 4 years old.

I'm not shopping... but I was surprised.
I'm planning on keeping the S4 for a couple more years. Not sure what I'll replace it with. Out of warranty RS6 for $20k maybe... that could be fun.
