What is this crud on my inside chrome trim?

There was some oxidization on my outer "chrome" trim which I was able to clean up completely with a treatment of buffing out with Zymol HD Cleanse.
But, I noticed the inside upper door panel trim (the chrome strips right where the window striker seal is).. has some weird discoloration or something. What causes that?? And is there any good method to cleaning it up?
Can you replace these chrome strips (or the whole upped black section of the door panels)as a seperate part or is the door panel only sold as one piece?
It isn't terribly noticable, but stuff like that bothers me. I'm kinda OCD with my cars.
Maybe you can see it in this pic?

You should at least be able to scrape ar it with your fingernail to make the discoloration uniform.
My guess is it's some kind of protective coating/sealant that dries out and gets very flaky over time? My 6 sedan was like this, amd my Avant showed the same. Can't remember the UrS4, but you get the point.
I'd be curious to know what chemical process/reaction causes whatever "it" is.

Mine looks the same on the driver's side front door
i don't think the other doors have the problem. I imagine it comes from rubbing your arm and such against it all the time. It apoears to have some sort of clear coat or something on it. Nothing i've tried makes it look any better.
