Its basically a computer-controlled switch. There is always power to primary side of the...
coil but there is no ground for it and therefore no current flow until the ECU says so. The ECU sends a signal to the POS channel in question (one of the five, the correct firing order) and the POS lets the 12 V power flow through that primary coil to ground. The current flowing through the primary coil, "excites" the high voltage secondary coil, which has no choice but to spill its, ah, er, current to the nearest easy way out, which, by design is the spark plug.
