Dash Cam permanent power source?
Good morning,
new member, but not new to Audis, or other VAG vehicles.
I was wondering if anyone had a lead where to tie into for a hardwired dash cam?
Not sure I want to get the center console apart and use the 12V cig lighter, thinking more like the sunroof panel or the relay and fuse carrier 3 in passengers floor area (some relays are not used). OBD port is an option, but rather not mess with it, service people might not like it.
Any other suggestions will be much appreciated.
This is for a 2023 Q8 Prestige S-Line.
Thank you
Frank

I have a cam that needed 2 power sources, one for driving and one for while parked (most electrical systems off) fuse box by the drivers knee accessed only when door open did not have this option,
so I went down to fuse box under foot rest in footwell, ran the cable from cam into windshield to headliner and routed it down drivers side to footwell, for key on power and key off power, all good.

My situation:
To solve that, I'm tapping the seat heating fuse (high Amp) and a random engine-switched low Amp fuse. Both fuses are in the fuse box below the footrest.
Bought a relay at the local car store and connected it to the two taps. It uses the low-Amp tap to check the engine status, and uses the high Amp tap to charge my BlackVue battery if the engine is on.
I've placed the BlackVue battery beneath the passenger's feet (next to the car's battery).
Cabling to and from the BlackVue battery is behind the A-trims, rearview mirror cover and headliner. Front dashcam is located next to my mirror.
If you don't need a long parking recording, you'll probably end up with a similar solution with a relay. But instead of powering a dashcam battery, it will directly power the dashcam.
- Q8 TFSI (2019)
- BlackVue 2CH dashcam
- BlackVue Power Magic Ultra Battery B-124E (+ a battery extension battery).
- The batteries charge while driving, and can power my front + rear camera for at least 48 hours while parked (when fully charged).
