FAILURE TO START

having an issue usually when I first get into car in the morning. Doors closed, trunk closed, got the key in hand. Press start, and NOTHING. all accessories come on but engine will not start. ONLY when I open the door, and then close again will the car start! Am I missing something? This happens pretty much every morning. Or after car has sat for at least 5-6 hours.

Weird, I have a 2020sq8 and this just happened to me for the first time last week. I tried pressing start about 4 times and then it finally started. We were up at the cabin so car hadn’t been started in about 4 days prior to this incident.

This sounds like a similar issue I had with my C7 S6. It was a fuel pump failure that rectified the problem.

My first 500 miles of owning my RSQ8 I was getting CEL on fuel pump sensors. They have since replaced it. I imagine it would have had a similar issue if I did not get a CEL.

I have noticed this sometimes if I don't press REAL hard on the brake pedal, the MMI will just start up, but not the engine. Pressing harder on the brake fixes it - there is no actual feedback, the pedal doesn't go lower, just more pressure on it

Thank you so much. Some of the other reply’s were starting to worry me. Got in and pressed harder on brake, started right up!

This same issue started for me about two weeks ago on my 2020 Q8. I can't imagine I'm pressing on the brake any differently than I have for the past two years. Seems strange that it is suddenly occurring for several people. My car has not been serviced recently, so it can't be due to a software modification. Eventually the starter engages after pushing the start button a few times. Maybe there is a sensor on the brake pedal that wears out over time and pushing the brake pedal harder allows it to function.

I have also had the rare occurrence of the engine not starting even though the MMI fires up. I also believe it was rectified by pressing a little harder on the brake pedal but have not confirmed that was the real fix.
