Has anyone gotten the December issue of CAR? They got a short drive as passenger
with chief project leader Dirk Isgen at the wheel.
Opening paragraph: "If you were still wondering why AUdi acquired Lamborghini back in 1998, you can stop wondering. The reason is right here. THis sis the car that catapults Audi straight through Porsche's window, landing it directly on the 911's carpet with a resounding crash, and you're going to need to take it very seriously. like it or not, the automotive landscape changes with the R8. Ignoring ist is not an option."
On to the drive: "The outer limits of a sleepy village define our start line. passing the last of the houses, Isgen buries the R8's throttle adn we speed up the mountain for the first time. Changing gear at a relaxed 6000rpm-some 2250rpm shy of the redline-the two-seater feels light-footed, inspired and very, very quick. In fact, at 1560kg, the V8-engined Audi weighs 130kg more than the V10 Gallardo, and is 85kg plumper than the Porsche 911 C4S. But the raw figures confirm the ballistic pace: with 420bhp, the 4.2-litre R8 charges from 0-62mph in 4.6 sec, to 125mph in 14.7 sec and on to a 1888mph top speed just over a minute after leaaving scorched tyre marks on the tarmac-the front lid triple-latched to the body to ensure it remains safely secured at such speeds.

Sounds like the exhaust note is a little reserved, which goes along with the character of the car.
Their comments: "Yet the V8 soundtrack by no means dominates the driving experience. unlike most sports car engines which tend to overwhelm your eardrums, Audi's V8 is amazingly civilized and refined. Its full-throttle voice is loud and clear and distinguished by a quite unmistakable tonality, though part-throttle sound waves are subdued yet pleasantly salient."

Yes I know. I have the Dec/06 Automobile magazine
which has the same passenger-seat test ride. Contents of the article was slightly different though.

Yes, it is by Georg Kacher. Though they're bragging that they're the only
publication on Earth to get it out onto the open road ahead of its official launch.
