Default hooking amp to stock stereo

I just bought a 2002 A4 1.8tq a couple of days ago and I would like to install my amp and subs. In previous cars, I have replaced the head unit, but since the stock head unit is good, I may leave it as is. Does anyone have advice about either replacing the head unit or, if I am to keep it stock, pulling it out to add an amp and subs. I just don't want to scratch any interior elements while trying to pull out the stock stereo to add the necessary wires. I would appreciate any advice on how to pull out the stock head unit and if there are hook-ups/outputs for a signal to send to the amp for the subs. Thank you.

Default You need the Audi stereo removal tools, and the Blaupunkt RCA adapter

Both are readily available from the usual places, depending where you are in the world.
Here's a link to the RCA adapter which simply plugs into the back of the stock HU and gives you front & rear pre-outs as well as remote turn on lead. You may get a slight pop from the speakers when you first turn the HU on when using aftermarket amps with the stock HU, this is quite normal and seems to vary from HU to HU.

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=79</a

That looks good. I'm in California in the US, so I'll have to see about ordering, shipping and monetary conversion. Do you know any techniques to remove the HU to access the back without scratching the dash or breaking any clips?

Default Use the right tools and do everything gently

You won't scratch the dash, but you can end up breaking the clips that hold the HU in if you are too forceful.

You can get them in the US, Autotoys or Crutchfield IIRC

Default What kind of stereo removal tools?

When you say stereo removal tools, it sounds like model-specific tools. In other cars I have done stereo work on, I've simply used a screwdriver, covered with a rag if necessary to prevent scratching anything, to remove the trim pieces and access screws that hold the HU in place. Will this method be adequate?
