It's a 2004 S4 w/ bose. I have a nice amp sitting in my closet and no speakers to throw at it and I was wondering how hard it would be to just plug the high quality amp in place of the bose amp.

Yes but I doubt it will be any improvement, probably sound worse TBH
Any upgrades to the Bose system really involve replacing both the speakers and amp. The Bose speakers are designed to work with the Bose amp which does some clever stuff with EQ's etc to make it sound OK. If you just replace the amp it'll probably sound worse.

Ok i'll bite....What size speakers would fit in the factory locations?
Big emphasis on the fact that I really don't want to do any fab work, and would like to be able to return it to dead stock if I want to. Thanks for any info.

Re: I actually threw some Hertz HSK165 comps in my ar with Bose and they are sounding great
Those run at 2 ohms then? Any links to any technical specs...googled and got conflicting specs - most say these are 4 ohm - so would damage the BOSE amp?

4 ohms does not damage the Bose amp, just pulls 1/2 the power...
...and the Bose speakers are 4 ohms on the tweeter, and "2" ohms (2.9 DCR) on the woofer, again per the label.
Is there a story about that 4 ohms blows the amp?
It undoubtedly sounds bad with most speakers, especially at higher volumes where the amp runs out of gas, and most speakers shouldn't be run off of a Bose amp because the Bose EQ curve is all wrong for a speaker that isn't crap... but it's not a recipe for sparkage.

Re: 4 ohms does not damage the Bose amp, just pulls 1/2 the power...
...interesting....I don't dislike the BOSE sound, just fed up of swapping out the rear deck speakers @ GBP90.00 plus the labour so GBP150 or about $270.00. Strealer just had the car to swap another one out...tell me the remaining one is also no good and when they look up the history, the car is on it's 5th one! Never any visable damage to the units...they just rattle.
