I had an quarrel with a friend about this: Is it possible to have two 12's and say you are going for sound quality? My friend says that I should get rid of one, but I want to be loud once in a while too, but Im mostly after quality.

I suppose, but if it deafens you without earplugs you'd never be able
to appreciate it! :-)
Seriously though, the whole distinction b/t "SQ" & "SPL" is drawn so people with systems that sound like *** can feel like there's something redeeming about the money they spent ("hey, at least I can still bounce quarters 1" off the roof").
I'll add that if it's too loud to listen to without pain/hearing loss, then who cares?

If it's balanced, of course! However, many people fill their trunk with subs,
get a huge sub amp to drive them all, and then rely on only one set of relatively normal front components and a relatively normal amp to drive them. The end result is too much emphasis on bass, and not enough emphasis on the tones above 100hz. If for some reason that trunk full of subs was turned all the way down, then theoretically the fronts wouldn't be outmatched. But that rarely happens.
If you get 2 12s in your trunk and a decent amp to drive them, you have to expect some volume from them, so your front stage better be pretty high-powered as well.
