Sub install question

Sub install question
I went to the Best Buy by my house today and I was suprised that the two car audio guys there were really really knowledgable. I was told that the bose system runs on 7ohm impedance and that the majority of car audio stuff is based on 4ohms. I was told that in order to run a sub in the trunk I would have to convert the signal from a speaker wire signal to RCA then run RCA cable to the trunk to an additional amp to power the subs. I was told by one of the techs that he could not guarantee that I wouldn't get feedback from doing the conversion to RCA etc.. Does all this sound right? I know most of you guys have done the Sub upgrade/install so what do you recommend I do? I have thought about just ripping out the bose and redoing the whole thing but I was quoted about 3k and I don't want to spend that much. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That sounds pretty wrong. Bose runs closer to .7 ohms.
You can split off an rca to a speaker, but its much better to go off the head unit and put a Stinger circuit breaker in to get rid of any pops and other quirkey stuff.
And 3000 for just a sub and amp (unless your components are very, very nice) is a waste of money. You could do a whole NICE system for that.

that sounds a bit high for a complete replacement
try a few other places before you go with Best Buy.
A complete overhaul its really the only way to go if you want to put that sub to use. Even the bose speakers can't keep up with volume when you add a good sub.
You should be able to get some pretty good stuff for a lot less than 3k. JL audio even makes a custom fiberglass enclosure for the A4 if youre car is a few years old. I have one... Its quite nice.
Oh, and I think the Best Buy guy was right when he said 7ohms, but I'm not 100% sure. .7ohm is an even stranger level.
