Default At what stage do you typically need to think about adding a capacitor?

And how do you know how large of a cap you need?

yeah - is there a rule of thumb, or even some formula, to determine that BEFORE install?

rule, 1 farad per 1000 watts

a cap is a bandaid, if you are having problems with power you need an upgraded alternator.
