I have some polished aluminum pieces that have some deep scratches on them. How do I polish out?

I've always heard that you can just polish out scratches in polished aluminum. For a deep scratch, I'm sure it requires some sanding. Does anyone know what kind of sanding is involved? What kind of compunds/polishes do you follow up with?

Default Aluminum polishing..

The main ones are black white and red (or jewlers rouge).

Rouge is what I use the most. You use this on a buffing wheel for best results. They have pretty stout pads and spin at about 3500rpm.

You can convert a bench grinder but the axle is shorter and the guards often keep you from getting at all the necessary angles. But it's possible. A real buffing wheel has a long axle and no guards which gives you a totally exposed buffing wheel for total access to many angles.

You can file aluminum with metal files, wet sand with varying degrees of wet/dry sand paper until you get down to about 1000 then polish.

I got a lot of practice when doing the concours circuit with my Jags.

Default Locally....

You can get it at many hardware stores, tool supply centers and believe it or not, truck stops!

I get my supplies at the local truck stop super center off the highway near me. Gas up, have some pancakes, buy some supplies, get another pair of chrome naked lady mud flaps for the S4 and I am set!! Really! (way cheaper, too)

What do you think the truckers use to keep those big rigs shinin'? ;-) 10-4 good buddy!
