internal to the finish, as nothing I've found yet will get rid of them. Maybe they're an optical by-product of metallic/pearlescent paint?

Default The only way I have been able to is to get the paint quite warm while polishing . . .

It is tricky though because you are physically changing the surface of the paint.

Default What Jeff said. When I first got my car it was swirled to hell.

The detailing shop said they had to use a high speed buffer with a specific substance that actually heats up the clearcoat so you can move it around.

He said he almost never uses it because it is difficult and you can usually achive good results with normal buffing. You can actually burn the paint pretty badly if you don't know what you are doing. In my case, the car really needed it because of the depth of the swirling.

Default I have already done that kinda job when I was working for professional detailers last summer...

They called it a coumpond. But you can use any Glaze or polish. The trick is to heat the clear coat enough to make it fill up the light scratches. You do that with an high speed buffer. You have to be very careful because a few seconds more at the same place and the paint and clear coat will just fly away. You have to always touch, get the feeling of the paint's heat to acheive the perfect temperature. It is really an hard job that can easily take a complete day to acheive. Including Glaze and wax after that. After that process, the paint look really just like a new one, even if the car was 10 y.o. It will just not last the same time for every vehicules, it depends on the paint quality and the detailing job.
