Default What causes metal polish to turn black when its rubbed on the metal?

I thought it was oxidation on the metal but I tried polishing the center caps of my wheels and I figured I'd keep polishing until it didn't change color. Did it once and wiped off, twice, and three times and it's still getting just as black as the first time. Does this mean my caps are still dirty or oxidized or is it just a function of the polish.

BTW, I was using Mother's Powermetal polish and the mini powerball.
