Tool for Brake Pad Thickness Measurement
Has anyone found a reasonably priced (non professional) tool. What has been your experience? I own a MY15 S3 but the tools should be OK for any Audi model. Sealy in the UK has an inexpensive tool but shipping to NA is a problem. I have looked at cheap caliper type thingies but they do not look useful

Update after further thought. I own an inexpensive vernier caliper. Its depth rod should be totally suitable to measure the (important) difference in depth to the rotor disc and the pad back plate. Audi provides this difference (at which the pads need to be replaced) and this measure allows for the back plate thickness. So that thickness is not needed to determine the pad remaining life. But if you know the backing plate thickness, the actual friction material thickness can be calculated, if you are curious. For my 17" disc and 20/16 mm F/R pads (dim. includes BP) the OEM backing plate thickness is 5 mm and Audi says replace when 10/9 mm F/R. So a special tool is not needed. A plastic vernier caliper costs < $5 and a metal (non digital) ~ $20.
