Did I ever say I hate SUVs???

Probably forgot (or didn't realize) it was awd and lifted off as the back end started to come around
This would be a bad mistake. With awd it is usually (though I concede not always, which is why awd isn't for amateurs) a better idea to keep the foot on the gas peal and smoothly power out of a rear wheel skid, steering where you want the car to go. Not such a smart idea with rwd only where more power usually means more trouble. With fwd only you don't usually lose the back end, ever, so if the front end skids cranking off steering lock first and then lifting off smoothly and slowly usually fixes the skid.
People think awd is the complete answer to slippery roads but it ain't unless you also know how the awd chassis handles the slippery stuff. Good drivers can drive faster with awd but amateurs get into trouble way faster with awd than with good old simple fwd.
If you don't believe me, try driving your Quattro hard on the slippery stuff with the ESP off.
