My engine oil light came on..I need oil..what oil am I supposed to put in 5w30?

Dude! An oil light is indicative of low oil pressure which could come from low oil levels but...
I'd have it checked by the dealer especially if it comes back on after a refill.
What kind of car? How old is it? Does it burn oil?
Read the car's manual for the type of oil required.

I flipped through it..says to check oil level and if it's low, put oil in...
Did not mention which oil..it happened to me before and the last time I called up the dealership and they told me which oil to put in but now I have forgotten!
Mine is a 2006 A3...with 33000km on it.

5W40 sound good but make sure it's approved VAG oil (synthetic too). Also it seems...
If I understand you correctly that this is the second time it happens to you and on a new car with about 33,000 Kms on it. That's low in mileage and it seems to be burning some oil. I'd have to wonder if this was normal.

my b7 2.0t loves oil...20000 on the clock and its been in for 3 top ups. light only came on once but i checked the level the other times. the tech said on the 2.0 that the oil light and oil pressure warning are differnt if that helps.
