Default Ok, so I tried it. Not too impressed, and I still plan to use my neck.

Two things:
1) These cute diagrams are totally wrong for my A4 Avant. The rear view mirror only sees out the rear window since the mirror is small and the C pillars are so big. So set up the "wrong" way, there's still very little duplication zone.

2) A big risk of Chi-town driving is other drivers moving to a lane at the same time as you and/or other forms of speeding. You'll never see that without turning your head.

Thanks for the interesting discussion, and it did improve my mirrors a little bit.

Default I see your point on that, but I don't buy it.

I have the mirrors out AND I always turn my head to look. Not like the girl in the exorcist or anything, but I do turn my head 90 degrees and my peripheral vision catches everything else. This is usually completed quickly. I have never drifted off in that second. I also am not tailgating the guy in front of me, so I have built in reaction time. I consider the mirrors only to be an aid and prefer to trust my eyes looking directly at something. I drive in heavy multilane traffic all of the time. I turn to look to see if anyone is coming into my blindspot as much as I look to see if anyone is currently in it. I am never going to stop doing this because it has saved me from countless accidents.

Default what happens when you take for eyes off the road to look next to you

and the driver in front of you slams on the brakes? you wont have time to react. I see your point about speeders and 2 cars moving into the same lane but in my experience the car shows up in your mirror before you get anywhere near you. and blinkers alert speeders you are changing lanes

Default You do need to leave ample room in front of you. Shameless described it well below.

Default True, but that's not always as easy, especially in the city....

I realize your rear view mirror won't "look" out the side windows, but if you are looking at it, notice the objects in the back, and then adjust your side mirrors so they only cover a part of what you see through rear-view. Go for a drive and you'll notice cars in lanes next to you go from your rear-view mirror into one of your side mirrors without interruption and will stay there until they are completely next to you, where your peripheral picks up.

I don't know, it works for me, no matter what car. I just posted it because the other night some guy in front of me decided to change lane out of the blue without looking at all and nearly hit me...

Default NASA did a demo once using strings taped to the mirrors & 6 people holding the other ends.

It showed the big blind spots just like these diagrams. Maybe we should do that at DE's too.

Default Good idea. I plan on incorporating it into our Teen Clinics.

Seriously - when was the last time you saw an F1 driver do a shoulder check?

LOL. I could use a couple of spotters for my commute. Redundancy is good.

if you leave ample room someone will just cut in and take it.

Default Re: Adjust your mirrors properly. That is all.

I've been using this kind of adjustment for couple years now. Once you get used to it, it's really priceless. But, it does depend on car. For example, my GTO rear view mirror catches a lot more side view than my mom's CX-9.
