Tiptronic :is it relyable?

I live in Italy and I owned an Audi 80. Now I want to buy an Audi A4 Avant with Tiptronic.
As You probably know in Italy this kind of transmission is unusual. In fact only the 1% of the car sold are automatic. Can somebody tell me if such kind of tiptronic are good, smoothing operational and relyable?
Obviously i cannot ask the Audi dealer in my City...
Are anyone switched from Mercedes to Audi automatic and why?

Reliability doesn't seem to be a problem, but performance...

...is. The Tiptronic sucks the life right out of whatever engine you choose, especially if you have quattro. I had a Jetta TDi leave me behind going up a hill the other day. Sure, if I had turned the air conditioning off, and had used the manual gate, I could have used all of the revs and kept up with the Jetta, but in auto mode revving to about 4500 or so, and with the AC on, it was a struggle! The tip is smooth, but that's part of the reason it is so sluggish. If I were in Italy, I would opt for the manual transmission and keep up with the traffic! :-)

Go ask the sales person how one would check the fluid level in a Tiptronic transmission.
No provision for owner to check level!!! Must be
done by ?competent? dealer at $/hr labor fee!
