I find the phpBB format annoying. Unfortunately, that is what many others use. So when I go to websites that use it, I dread it. Too many people bumping threads just because they want it their thread at the top. It ain't gonna happen here. It's much easier to see what post within the thread is being replied to with this format. Not so easy with phpBB format.

Just because AW doesn't use the popular format of phpBB, does not mean it is out of date. It may have an older look, but I think it is still better than phpBB. Kind reminds me of a former place of employment that implemented a technology in the 1980's. In comes a new CEO in the 2000's and he says that they need to update to what everyone else is using. Then there is an industry article looking forward to 2015-2025 when some companies may be able to implement a certain technology. Guess what, it's the out-of-date technology that this company implemented in the 1980's that other companies are trying to get to. So, come back in 10-20 years and let us know how phpBB is doing.
