Default According to this, 0-40 or 15-50 will work. 15-50 may be better for slow/heavy traffic conditions.

Default Soon as this thread started, I knew it was going to get Shane going for a long time....

I am surprise Ross has stayed out of this argument, he is usually very opinionated about motor oil and massage oil.

Default *snicker*....I guess I just get a little annoyed when people

assume that an oil is to thin for a modern engine. Today's engines are an entirely different breed from those of 10 years ago. A lot of cars use to come with 20-50 as factory fill. More and more of today's high end cars are coming with 0-40, 5-30 etc.

I already said it once, and I'll say it again- 0-40, 5-30, and possibly 15-50 will do just fine as long as you use a decent brand and change it every 5k.

I think there is probably a lot of confusion out there about how a multi-vis oil actually works. Heck, I'm not entirely sure that I understand it.

I've seen a lot of good results with 0-40 (actual scientific analysis), and it seems to be working quite well in my car, so I see no reason to switch. I also trust Jorge's expertise (on cars anyways ;-) so if he says run 5-30 in your car, then run 5-30. The difference between the two is negligible in this climate.

Default Here are the recs for my car. 0-40 comes up several times

Listed below are the oil viscosities that your vehicle manufacturer recommends for different temperature ranges, as well as the Mobil 1 motor oil that is suitable for your vehicle. You Chose The Following Vehicle:
Make: Volkswagen (edit)
Model: Jetta GLS (edit)
Year: 2002 (edit)
Engine: L4-1781cc 1.8L Turbo (AWP) (edit)

10W-30 5° F to 59° F
You can use Mobil 1® with SuperSynTM 10W-30 with confidence. This viscosity is also available in Mobil Drive Clean OilTM and Mobil Drive Clean PlusTM High Mileage formula.

15W-40 Above 5° F
Mobil does not carry that specific viscosity. While it is always wise to check with your vehicle's manufacturer, you can use Mobil 1® with SuperSynTM 0W-40 or 15W-50 with confidence.

5W-30 All temps
You can use Mobil 1® with SuperSynTM 5W-30 with confidence. This viscosity is also available in Mobil Drive Clean OilTM and Mobil Drive Clean PlusTM - both the Newer Vehicle and High Mileage formulas.

5W-30 Below 59° F

Default So, should I stop using the Discount Auto Parts generic brand 15W20 oil?

Replacing filters gets expensive, so I just wash my filter out with soapy water, let dry, then reinstall. Works great for my shop vac filter! Is that bad?
