(news article) Porsche launches mandatory takeover bid for Volkswagen . . .
as required by German law.<ul><li><a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/volkswagen-shares-slip-after-below-market/story.aspx?guid=%7B9E038C8D%2D15A2%2D4727%2D8776%2 D38E4B4AE2BF8%7D&dist=morenews">http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/volkswagen-shares-slip-after-

They're offering 14% below value for shares- intentionally trying to keep holders from selling.
The newswire excerpt I read said that the main purpose was to keep VW in German hands. Weidiking or whatever his name is said Porsche expects to acquire a total of 50% (the next threshold that requires a bid) in the long run.

Don't get me wrong the R8 is a nice car... but audi entering supercar territory is not needed
VW = Economic, everyday driver
Audi = Luxury
Porsche = Sport / Racing
Lambo = Exotic...
The R8 is overprice and under powered... It seems to me audi is not really leading these days... they weight for vw porsche to develop a sport utility and then release q7, same with this, the r8 is based off the lambo gueredo (sp).
I don't think a person would be persuaded to buy an r8 over porsche 911... just my opinion

disagree on all accounts, I think a large number of people would be persuaded from the 911
the R8 is more of an eye-opener, it stands at the midground between sports car and exotic (as you mentioned w/ the shared underpinnings from the Lambo Gallardo) with a decent engine. Don't really think it's underpowered at all, the Carerra 4s has less than the R8 (355 vs. ~420) and demands a premium on brand-name loyalty alone. I think you're in for a shock as well I forget the exact statistic but a fair majority if not all of the new R8s have been spoken for. To each his own, but I think the R8 has found a nice little pocket for growth in a limited production daily-drivable semi-exotic sports car

yep.
though it can't make that happen exactly. what it will do (and probably has already started to do) is truncate the performance of the V10 R8. because of porsche i don't think we'll ever see another engine in the R8 after the V10. ever.
what'll happen is that the next 911 will go the mid engine route, become what the R8 would have always been, and prevent audi from ever making another R8 type car again.
only way that will change imo is for audi and porsche to have nothing to do with each other. fat chance in hell of that.

Audi can always go its own way from VAG.
Become independent much like BMW. That'll cut out the VAG politics and let Audi do what it really wants to do.
Not that it'll happen, but it's not a bad way to go.
