Need a quick lesson please
The engine is a stock 10V 2.3 liter with 160k miles and still runs smooth, and has no issues. I only have the K&N filter as a mild upgrade. The one problem I have with the engine is lack of power, especially above 4000rpm when it starts to struggle. Is this normal or is there something holding back the power.
What if anything can be done to improve the performance. I am not looking for massive improvement, just a little more power for getting on the highway and merging with traffic.
Thanks
Re-reading your post - struggles ABOVE 4K? Ooh... that's not so good - that's when the old girl should start coming alive! Check for vacuum leaks - esp. the rubber boot between the TB and the fuel distributor - there can be cracks that are sealed at idle - but open when the engine moves under torque.
Also -when were plugs / wires/ cap & rotor done? Made by Bosch or Beru? (If no - dump 'em!)
Don't forget to check the oil breather for leaks, too! (If you have the old rubber breather hose on the driver's side - is it collapsed? You can assemble a copper pipe - use a long & a short piece with an elbow between - the short piece long enough to be clamped in behind the engine - the long piece almost to the engine spigot. Save some $$$!!)
Are the fuel filters original? Is ans is yes... change them both.
What about the o2 sensor? Original? Might be time for a change, if yes.
