Default Any grammar ****'s wish to enlighten?

So, at the end of a sentence is it:

I went to Washington, D.C. Then I went home.

I went to Washington, D.C.. Then I went home.

Default I believe it's the first. But are you really using that as a second sentence?

It would be more succinct if you said "I went to Washington D.C., then I went home."

Default You only need a single period. However, the commonly accepted abbreviation for the District of

Columbia is DC (no periods) as it is with the states (VA, MD, etc.).

I also agree with Jim on the second sentence.
